This policy describes Everyday Words on iPhone, iPad and Android devices. It also describes information you choose to send us when asking for support.

If you visit our website, our separate website privacy notice explains how information is handled there.

Information saved by the app

Everyday Words works offline. It does not require an online account.

The app saves information locally on your device. This includes:

  • Profile names. You can use a name, an alias or initials.

  • Your settings and activity choices.

  • Typed answers and unfinished responses needed to continue an activity.

  • Practice records, including activities, levels, answers checked, help used and self-ratings where available.

  • Items encountered, passages read and dates of practice.

  • Unfinished sets and guided sessions.

The app uses this information to remember your preferences, continue unfinished activities and show your practice history. It also uses previous encounters when selecting items for future sets.

The app does not send these profiles, answers or practice records to Speaking of Words Ltd. We cannot view them remotely.

Audio, advertising and tracking

The app plays recordings included with the app. It does not record your voice.

Everyday Words has no advertising or built-in service that sends usage analytics to us. It does not track you across other apps or websites. Your answers are not sent to an online AI service.

Apple and Google services are separate from the app. These are described below.

Profiles on a shared device

Profiles keep practice records separate within the app. They do not have passwords. Anyone who can open Everyday Words on your device can switch between its profiles and see saved information.

Keeping and deleting information

Practice information is kept locally so you can use the features described above. Starting a new set does not erase earlier practice history.

To delete a profile and its associated practice records, open Profiles, choose Edit for that profile, then Delete and confirm. The app must have at least one profile. Create another profile first if you want to delete the only one.

To remove the app and its local data, use Delete App on your iPhone or iPad. Offload App keeps the app's documents and data. Apple explains the difference in its storage guide.

On Android, open your device's settings for Everyday Words and use Clear storage or Clear data to remove its local data. Menu names vary by device. Clear cache does not remove all saved data. See Google's storage guide. Archiving an app keeps its data.

Deleting local information does not remove copies already held in a device backup or information you have separately sent to us.

Device backups

On iPhone and iPad, your device settings may allow app data to be included in an iCloud or computer backup. The app permits its local database to be included in these backups. See Apple's information about iCloud backups.

On Android, your device may include app data in a backup or transfer it when you set up another device. What is included depends on your device and backup settings. See Google's information about Android backups.

Everyday Words does not provide its own online sync service. Device backups are separate from data sent to Speaking of Words Ltd. Bringing back an earlier backup may also bring back earlier app data.

App Store and Google Play services

Apple handles App Store downloads and payments. Google handles Google Play downloads and payments. The app does not ask for or store your payment-card details.

Apple and Google may process information about downloads, purchases and device diagnostics under their own settings and terms. See Apple's privacy policy and Google's privacy policy.

Apple and Google make reports available about app downloads, sales and technical performance. Depending on the platform and privacy settings, these may include purchase information, device and app versions, and crash information. If we use these reports, we use them to manage app sales and investigate technical problems.

Where we use personal information in these reports, we rely on our legitimate interests in managing app sales and keeping the app working reliably. Where we must keep records by law, our basis is compliance with that legal obligation.

We keep any personal information we copy from these reports only while it is needed for these purposes or to meet legal recordkeeping requirements.

If you contact us

If you email us, we receive your email address, your message and any attachments you choose to send. We use this information to respond and handle your enquiry. Contacting us is optional.

You do not need to send a diagnosis or personal practice answers to ask for help with the app. Check screenshots for information you do not want to share.

Speaking of Words Ltd is the data controller for personal information we receive and use for app support.

We rely on our legitimate interests in answering enquiries and providing app support.

We keep support messages and attachments while handling your enquiry and any related follow-up. We delete them when they are no longer needed for those purposes, unless we need to keep them to handle an ongoing dispute or meet a legal obligation.

We use Google Workspace for business email. Messages and attachments you send us are handled through that service.

Google may process messages outside the UK. Its data-processing terms provide for recognised adequacy arrangements or standard contractual clauses for international transfers, as applicable. You can read these safeguards in Google’s data-processing terms.

Your privacy rights

For personal information we hold, you can ask for access, correction or deletion. Depending on the circumstances, you may also have rights to restrict its use or receive a portable copy.

You can object to use of your personal information based on legitimate interests.

Contact us using the email address above. These rights depend on the circumstances and applicable law. We do not hold a remote copy of your local app profiles or practice records.

You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK's data protection regulator.

Changes to this policy

We will update this policy if the app or our handling of personal information changes.
